Ingredients

  • 1-2 shots of espresso or strong brewed coffee see note #1
  • 200 ml oat milk ideally a barista style
  • Ice cubes plain water, coffee, or oat milk ice cubes

Optional additions

  • Up to 1 tablespoon of honey maple syrup or a sweetener of your choice
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon or cocoa powder dusting on top

Instructions

  • Begin by making strong coffee or espresso. See note #1 for my French Press Espresso recipe which is an easy way to make espresso without a machine.
  • (Optional) If you want to add sweetener, now is the time to do it. I mix the coffee with syrup, sweetener, or sugar before the next step.
  • Next, fill a tall glass with ice cubes and pour one shot, a double espresso shot, or coffee over the ice.

  • (Optional) Froth the milk with a milk frother.
  • Pour the milk over the iced coffee.

  • If you frothed the oat milk and the cold foam gets stuck, scoop it out with a spoon.
  • Stir with a straw or long spoon and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Espresso/coffee options: Medium-roast coffee beans have the best flavor for this cold coffee drink. I made my French Press Espresso recipe to make a couple of espresso shots. This recipe is the easiest way to make espresso without a machine and is so handy for making fancy coffee drinks at home. If you have an espresso machine that would be another great option, or even a stovetop espresso maker (moka pot). In a pinch, you can add a teaspoon of instant coffee to 1/3 cup of boiled water to make strong coffee. It works well as an espresso replacement. Cold brew coffee would also work really well as it's already quite strong.
  2. Gluten-free: Not all oat milk brands are certified gluten-free. Check the label if in doubt!
  3. Hot oat milk latte: Make it hot by skipping the ice and heating up cold oat milk on the stove over medium heat or in the microwave. Don't let the milk boil. You can then froth it with a handheld frother to get that delicious foamy topping. Oat milk is great for latte art. It's almost like using whole milk.
  4. Other non-dairy milk: This recipe works with most plant-based milk. My favorite non-dairy options are unsweetened almond milk, vanilla soy milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, and macadamia milk.

Storage instructions

Store this refreshing drink in an airtight container like a mason jar in the fridge for up to 3 days. If you added plain ice, remove it before storing it so it doesn't become watery.
